How We Can Help

New England Chiropractic clinic aims to deliver gentle, holistic chiropractic treatment to improve the structure and function of the body.

Chiropractic literally means “done by hand” and is based on the scientific premise that the body is a self- healing and self- regulating organism. These important functions are controlled by the Nervous system which includes the brain, spinal cord and all the nerves of the body.  It is a drug and surgery free way to improve your health.

The Nervous Systems purpose is to regulate all the other systems of your body, as well as helping you adapt to your environment.  The nerves branch out to every part of your body. The nervous system helps to control every organ and cell; it controls breathing, digestion, thought processes and motor movements.

This means that the nervous system helps the messages from your brain reach and affect the systems of your body, and allow messages to return to your brain from your body. The nervous system is protected by spinal joints, so it is imperative that these joints are working well so as not to cause interference. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (spine and pelvis) and function (the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.

Being our best requires us to adapt to the physical, chemical and emotional stressors that we are faced with every day in our lives. We are born with the ability to heal ourselves if the brain is able to send messages via the nervous system. The stressors in our lives can cause subluxations of the vertebral joints of the spine and cause interference with the nervous system.

Chiropractors may be able to improve so many conditions by carefully and gently clearing the passages for these messages, by adjusting the spine, reducing interference to the nervous system, letting your brain fix the problem.

Techniques

SOT (Sacro Occipital Technique)

SOT is a technique developed over 70 years of research by Major DeJarnette. It is a gentle method of adjusting the cranium, pelvis extremities and organs. This method looks for and adjusts patterns in the body, not just single body parts.

A qualified SOT practitioner uses body indicators that tell us where and when to adjust. These body indicators also let us know that the adjustment was effective both after the treatment and between treatments. From the indicators we can design a different adjustment set on each visit, listening to the body each time.

These gentle adjustments aim to remove interference to normal nervous system function, and correct cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) flow around the brain and spinal cord.

Diversified Technique

Diversified Technique uses an analysis of the spine using motion palpation, or feeling for joint movement. When a mal position of a vertebral spinal joint is identified a specific manual thrust is delivered to the joint.

Direction, speed, depth and angle that are used is the result of years of experience, practice and a thorough understanding of spinal mechanics. Adjustments to a spinal joint are used to reduce interference to the nervous system, but all joints in the body can be adjusted to restore proper range of motion.

What is a subluxation?

A subluxation is a slight dislocation or misalignment of the vertebrae. These disturbances can cause irritation of the nerves and blood vessels which branch off from the spinal cord between the vertebrae.  This irritation may cause pain and dysfunction in muscle and organ tissue, as well as neurological imbalance in the normal body processes.

What causes a subluxation?

Physical: Injuries, accidents, slips, falls, the birth process, prolonged 'abnormal' postures or even simple repetitive movements.

Mental and emotional: Upsets, arguments, personal traumas, work pressure, life or career changes.

Chemical: Toxins, additives and chemicals used in food production, cigarette smoking, medications and other pollutants in our environment.

What are the effects of subluxation?

Reduced spinal function: When your spine is storing a build-up of tension and subluxations, your natural mobility, flexibility and posture are affected. Your spine receives less nutrient supplies, its ability to absorb stress declines and additional pressure is placed on surrounding joints. This begins a process of spinal wear and tear 'degeneration'.

Spinal pain: Your spine's structure allows it to absorb a lot of pressure and stress, so subluxations can be present for years before pain of other symptoms begin. Through 'referred' pain you might notice the stress as headaches, leg and arm discomfort or pain in other areas. Pain typically surfaces, even after a seemingly small stress, when your spine simply can't absorb any more. Much like tooth decay, you don't often feel the symptoms until it's been progressing for some time.

Nervous system interference: Subluxations may reduce, alter or interfere with the flow of information throughout your nervous system, reducing your body's ability to coordinate its functions and adapt to changing requirements and stresses. Subluxations can have a dramatic effect on your health and well being and may lead to a wide range of conditions from back pain and digestive problems to colic, asthma, learning difficulties and other mental and emotional symptoms.
